Funke the Cool-Breath Dragon

In the middle of Dragonwood, where pine trees whispered and sunlight made the ferns glow, lived a little dragon named Funke. He was about 3 feet from nose to tail, with pebble-blue scales and bright, curious eyes. All the other young dragons practiced puffing hot fire. Foom, foom, foom went their flames. But when Funke opened his mouth, only cool air came out. Whooosh, shhhhh, breezy and gentle, like a snowflake’s sigh.

Some dragons laughed. “No fire?” they teased. “What kind of dragon are you?” Funke’s ears drooped. Have you ever felt different, friends? He tried harder, but his breath only frosted a few dandelions. “Maybe I’m no use,” he murmured, and a little cloud of cold twirled and vanished at his feet.

A Wise Family’s Love

That evening, Funke padded home to the cozy cave he shared with Mama and Granny Ember. The walls smelled of warm clay and cinnamon stew. Mama touched his head. “Practice is good,” she said softly. “But remember, your breath is yours for a reason.”

Granny Ember’s eyes twinkled like fireflies. “Cool air can calm hot things, my little breeze,” she hummed. “It can carry seeds. It can soothe sore paws. It can whisper to clouds.” Funke listened, swinging his tail. He liked chilling lemon water for the mouse family and keeping the soup from boiling over. But inside, he still wished for a big dragon job, a brave, bold moment that made his heart beat boom-boom with pride.

The Fire’s Fury

The next day was bright and very dry. The grass was crispy, like old paper, and the air felt warm and dusty on Funke’s tongue. He walked with his friend Pip the rabbit to pick blueberries. Plop, plip, their baskets filled with shiny purple berries. Pip stuffed three into his cheeks at once. “Mmpf,” he said, which meant, “Delicious!”

Funke laughed and sent a tiny gust. Whooosh! A berry popped into Pip’s ear. “Hey!” Pip giggled, wiggling it out. Then Funke smelled something sharp and bitter. Do you know that smell? Smoke. A far-off crackle answered him. Pop. Snap. Pip’s whiskers twitched. “Funke,” he whispered, ears high, “the forest sounds scared.” Funke’s heart thumped three careful beats. One. Two. Three.

A dry lightning forked from a gray cloud and struck a fallen branch. Fire licked up the bark, hungry and fast. It rushed through the grasses with a roaring hiss. Animals cried out from many directions—squirrels chattered, deer stamped, badgers barked. Big dragons hurried over. They tried to help, but every beat of their wide wings stirred the flames higher, and the heat pushed them back like a wall.

“Too hot!” called Blaze, squinting through smoke. The sky turned smudgy, and ash fell like black snow. Funke’s paws trembled, but he saw small shapes trapped near a bramble path. “Pip,” he said, voice thin but steady, “we can’t wait. We have to help.” Have you ever felt brave and shaky at the same time? So did Funke.

The Cool Hero’s First Rescue

Funke stepped toward the heat. It wrapped around him like a rough blanket. He shut his eyes and blew a careful breath. Whooosh—shhhh—whooosh. The air around the bramble path cooled and turned misty, and the fire there slumped down, sleepy and slow.

“This way!” he called. Out wobbled a line of prickly hedgehogs, noses twitching. “Mind your toes,” Funke smiled. Pip hopped ahead, clearing twigs. The hedgehogs rolled like little pinecones to safety. Funke blew again, this time in short puffs: whoosh-whoosh-whoosh, like clapping hands. The path widened, and a tortoise named Moss trundled through, blinking in surprise. “Bless my shell,” Moss murmured. Funke’s chest felt warm, but not from fire. From hope. Maybe his breath could be a shield.

Saving the Forest Friends

The flames leaped toward a cluster of ferns, where a doe and her fawn were pressed nose to nose. Funke’s pads tingled from the heat. He took one step, then another. He remembered Granny’s voice: “Cool air can calm hot things.” He breathed in, held the air like a smooth stone, and sent it out in a slow stream. Whooooooosh. A ribbon of chilly wind curled between the mother and the fire, making the flames bob and bow.

“Follow the chilly trail,” Funke said gently. The doe lifted her head. The fawn wobbled forward, hooves tapping. They walked inside the cool tunnel, ears flicking, and reached a damp patch of earth with room to rest. Funke’s tail swished. He felt the tug of a bigger idea.

Up above, a nest of speckled eggs trembled on a branch. The tree bark popped from heat. Two tiny birds fluttered close, chirping fast. “Hold on,” Funke called, though his voice came out small. He scrambled onto a log, then up the trunk, his claws clicking. The air shimmered hot against his cheeks. He leaned in and blew a thin, silver stream of air along the branch. Shhhhh. The bark cooled to dark brown. The eggs steadied. The parent birds darted in and nudged them to a safer fork, cheeping thanks.

Leading the Big Dragons

Funke slid down and blinked through the smoke. The fire was racing toward a fallen log full of little homes—mice, beetles, and a sleepy lizard. “We need a plan,” Funke said. Pip nodded. “Badgers can dig a line,” he squeaked. “Beavers can splash water.”

Funke lifted his chin. “Badgers! Dig a ditch here to stop the crawl. Beavers! Wet those logs. Big dragons, stomp a safe ring, slowly, so your wings don’t feed the flames.” The dragons glanced at each other, surprised to be taking tips from the smallest one. But Blaze rumbled, “You heard him.” Claws scraped, tails slapped water, feet thumped. Funke swept his cool breath back and forth like a broom. Whooosh, sweep, whooosh, sweep. The fire met the ditch, paused, and shrank.

A sudden gust drove a hot tongue of flame toward Hollow Home, the burrow where rabbits hid. “Not there!” Pip cried. Funke planted his feet. He counted, steady as a drum. “One, two, three—whooosh!” He blew in quick pulses, like puffing out birthday candles. The flames wavered. “Again!” Pip shouted. “One, two, three—whooosh!” Funke cooled the ground ahead so the rabbits could run across without burning their paws.

The Magic of Clouds and Mist

Now the fiercest flames circled the old stone well, the heart of Dragonwood. Heat shimmered like a mirage. Funke remembered Granny’s words: “Cool air can whisper to clouds.” He looked to the lake a few yards away. Silver ripples slapped the shore.

“If I cool the air above the water,” he thought, “maybe the lake can help.” He inhaled, long and deep, then blew a stream that skimmed the water’s skin. Whoooooosh. Mist rose, soft as breath on a window. He aimed higher. The mist thickened into a gray blanket and drifted toward the fire. Steam hissed as it hugged hot branches. The flames flinched and hunched down. Funke’s lungs ached, but his eyes shone. “Come on, clouds,” he whispered. “Come closer.”

A rumble answered far above. Not a loud crack, but a friendly grumble. “I hear you,” Funke said with a grin. He kept his stream steady, shaping the mist with little pushes. Whoosh-whoosh, slow and smooth. The big dragons spread their wings, but this time they moved carefully, like fans, guiding the cool blanket instead of feeding the flames. Raindrops began, first a few, then many. Tap, tap, tap on leaves. The fire sighed and shrank, then sputtered like a sleepy campfire.

Victory and New Friendship

There were last, stubborn sizzles in a circle of fern. Funke trotted over, careful of the smoky ground. Moss the tortoise was there, splashing muddy water with his shell. “Ha!” Moss chuckled. “A shell is a great bucket.”

Blaze lumbered close, eyes soft now. “Little one,” Blaze said, “show me where to step.” Funke pointed with his tail. “There, and there. Slow.” They moved together. A salamander sneezed—choo!—and a puff of steam popped from his nose. Everyone blinked, then burst into tired giggles. Pip fanned the salamander with his ears. The last embers snapped once, twice, and went quiet. Funke sat with a thump. His legs felt jelly-wobbly. But inside, he felt tall, like a tree touching the sky.

Morning light slid between the trees. The forest smelled like wet earth and a little like charcoal. Blackened trunks stood beside green ones. In the quiet, tiny sounds returned—drips, peeps, soft rustles. Funke’s belly worried. “Did I do enough?” he asked, staring at his paws.

Granny Ember reached him on steady feet. She touched her nose to his forehead. “You did what only you could do,” she said. Blaze stepped forward, wings folded. “I laughed before,” Blaze rumbled, “because I didn’t understand. I’m sorry, Funke. Your breath is brave.” The other dragons nodded, their scales clicking softly. Funke blinked back tears. Pip squeezed his tail. “Different can be daring,” Pip whispered. Funke let out a tiny, happy whoosh that made dew dance on a leaf.

A New Beginning

The animals began to tidy and mend. Badgers brushed ash from burrows. Beavers patched dams. The dragons lifted fallen branches away. Funke blew a soft wind that carried seeds from pinecones and pods, letting them spin like tiny helicopters. “Plant a little hope,” he told the seeds, and they landed in damp soil. The forest would heal. It always did, with time and care.

Blaze nudged him. “Will you teach me those careful wing moves?” Blaze asked. Funke smiled. “Only if you teach me your best ground stomp.” They practiced slow steps and gentle flaps. Thump, sweep. Thump, sweep. Can you try it too? Thump with your feet, sweep with your hands. It felt like dancing a promise.

That evening, Dragonwood held a Breeze Feast. Wind chimes tinkled from branches. There was cool berry lemonade, and pies with crispy tops that crackled when cut. Funke tried to chill one pie and accidentally frosted it. Everyone cheered. “A pie-sicle!” Pip shouted, and his whiskers wiggled with joy.

The dragons asked for one more lesson, so Funke taught them his favorite rhythm: sniff, sip, send. “Sniff the air, sip a calm breath, send a gentle whoosh.” They practiced until the stars came out like silver seeds in the sky. Funke curled beside Granny Ember. The forest hummed, safe and slow. “Different,” he whispered, “is a kind of strong.” Do you feel your special spark too? Hold it close. The world needs your whoosh.
